Van Phuong Bay and Whale Island are often used for the same region while Whale Island or Hon Ong is actually a small island on the east side of this pristine bay. It consists out of the larger peninsula Dam Mon Ha, Bai Tre and Whale Island in between, bordered by Van Phuong Bay on the west and the South China Sea in the east. Found at almost 80km north of Nha Trang, Whale Island is a paradise and once known for its whale shark encounters and huge manta rays. Nowadays, in April and May consider yourself lucky if you meet these amazing creatures.
Many dives start at the beach and drop to substantial depths quickly. Hon Trau Nam or Three Kings is with several nice swimmthroughs one of the most popular dive sites in the area. Other dive sites such as Hon Tai, Bai Su and Hon Kho Trang are excellent muck diving spots where you can find all ranging from barracuda and leopard rays to frogfish and nudibranchs in all colors imaginable. Van Phong Bay offers high speed drift dives, fantastic coral diving, steep wall dives and colorful shallow diving.
